Reading around the Tiled Chimney
Published · Updated
Leaf-patterned tiles climb the broad chimney at the center of this reading room, then branch into the curved plaster vaults. Moss green, ochre, indigo and rust-colored squares form uneven bands around a deep unlit hearth. The raised botanical details and softened tile edges contrast with the thick, rough cream plaster. Small arched windows sit on either side, with deep cushioned seats below and two book-lined reading galleries above.
An oak staircase rises along the left wall, giving the upper spaces a visible route from the main room. Turned timber balusters, low shelves and shaded lamps make the balconies feel like intimate rooms of their own. Below, a worn leather armchair faces the hearth, and a narrow red hexagonal tile floor runs between the seating areas. The view begins within another cushioned alcove, so the near arch frames the connected spaces rather than separating them. Autumn daylight brightens the windows and higher tile faces, while the fireplace and shelves remain darker. The room combines the practicality of a home library with the patient detail of handmade ceramic decoration.
