Roots Through the Secret Arcade
Published · Updated
A huge fig tree has grown around a pale stone arcade, its roots descending in thick, twisting bundles. Some follow the edges of the pointed arches, while others spread across the wall or reach down beside the columns. The contrast is striking: the stone has a measured, repeated shape, and the living wood takes an irregular route around it. Small ferns and glossy leaves emerge from the spaces between roots and masonry.
A still pool mirrors the arches and the filtered green light. Fine ripples interrupt the reflection near the center, while the wet stone rim provides a dark border in the foreground. Through the openings, a narrow path continues into palms and dense planting. Sunlight falls from the left, revealing bark ridges, moss and the worn surfaces of the stone without flattening the shaded recesses.
