Rotating Stage Scenery Reveals a Midnight Street
Published · Updated
Rotating stage scenery holds two imaginary places in the same frame. A painted orchard and an ochre street meet on the faces of painted towers while the crew guides them across the stage boards. From the wings, the viewer can see both the theatrical picture and the construction that supports it. An actor waiting nearby gives the change a sense of purpose.
Visible edges, painted surfaces and caster bases keep the transformation rooted in ordinary materials. The elaborate leaf collar on the actor's costume belongs to the same invented world as the scenery, while the work clothes distinguish the people assembling it. Warm stage light reaches into the darker side space, revealing a moment usually hidden between the scenes of a performance.
