Sailfin blenny opens its fan above the reef
Published · Updated
A sailfin blenny opens its broad fan above a small reef burrow, turning a patch of pale rubble into a vivid underwater scene. The fish rises almost upright beside the dark hole, its large round eye looking across the sandy bottom. Purple and brown markings pick out the body while fine white speckles catch the filtered daylight.
The translucent dorsal fin is the photograph's main shape. Narrow supporting rays spread through an olive membrane marked with darker patches, creating a delicate fan against the softer blue water. The smaller fins beneath the head and the compact tail remain close to the body. Broken shell fragments, low algae and coarse sand establish the scale of this tiny resident.
Seagrass blurs into the upper background, leaving enough open water to separate the display from the reef below. The vertical composition follows the fish from burrow to raised fin without losing its surroundings. This picture suits a marine nature story, a coastal room or a collection centered on surprising color and form in ordinary animal behavior.
