Sailfin Lizard above the River Reflection

Published · Updated

A sailfin lizard rests on a fallen trunk above a green river reflection. Its head turns toward the leaves at left, while long toes grip the rough bark below. The near foreleg and hind leg hold the body close to the wood. A single long tail follows the diagonal trunk before curving toward the lower edge.

Tiny yellow and green marks break up the dark slate scales across the animal's flank. Short spines run along the neck and back, then give way to the tall ribbed sail at the base of the tail. The pale eye remains sharply distinct against the darker head. Fine ridges in the bark echo the textured surface of the reptile.

The river opens behind the lizard in a broad band of muted green. Soft reflections of trunks and leaves cover the calm water, with brighter patches where sunlight enters the canopy. Hanging roots and vines line the far bank. Moss clings beneath the fallen tree, and nearby leaves frame the animal without hiding its shape. The generous habitat gives the quiet resting posture a strong sense of scale.
