Sastrugi snow sweeps across the plateau
Published · Updated
Sastrugi snow sweeps across an empty polar plateau in long wind-carved ridges. Warm light follows the sharp upper lips, while the curved hollows beneath remain deep blue. The nearest forms are large enough to show fine granular texture and fragile-looking edges, with smaller ridges repeating toward the distant horizon.
The surface changes continuously from smooth troughs to rougher windward slopes. Some ridges end in short pointed tips, while others continue across the frame as low uneven walls. A faint trace of loose snow moves just above the ground in the middle distance. These small variations keep the broad white field from becoming a regular pattern.
A solitary dark peak rises far beyond the snow beneath a pale apricot sky. Its small outline gives scale to the wide plateau without interrupting the flowing foreground. There are no tracks or structures in view. The image stays close to the meeting of light and surface, letting blue shadow reveal the depth and direction of each low ridge across the open landscape.
