Scarecrow Coat Wins a Crooked Button

Published · Updated

A scarecrow coat becomes the center of a small family joke during a harvest contest. The girl holds a large dark button against the mustard fabric and looks back toward her father. He kneels beside the figure with the coat hem in one hand, while her brother smiles and holds a spare straw hat. The uneven fastening gives all three something specific to notice.

Their entry has a round cloth face, mismatched button eyes and a stitched smile. Straw emerges beneath its hat and around its worn trouser cuffs, making the figure clearly handmade. The children wear a checked pinafore and a corduroy waistcoat, echoing the scraps and fabrics used throughout the display. Rows of other scarecrows fill the courtyard behind them on stable wooden supports.

Plum and mustard awnings frame the space between shingled village buildings. Straw decorations include a large spider tied beside the porch, while cornstalks and chrysanthemums fill the edges. A distant glimpse of water and wooded hills opens the view beyond the lively contest. Soft afternoon light joins the faces, fabric and brick paving.
