A sea otter steadies a shell on its chest

Published · Updated

A sea otter holds an open shell against its chest while floating on its back. Two small forepaws steady the pale halves near its whiskered face. Wet fur gathers into dark clumps across the body, while the head remains lighter and more finely textured. The hind flippers fold close together at the far end, with the tail visible just beneath the water.

Long kelp ribbons pass around the animal in loose curves. Their small rounded floats and olive blades rise to the surface in some places and disappear into the green water in others. Gentle ripples meet the otter's sides, making a narrow shifting outline between fur and sea.

The high oblique viewpoint shows the complete animal without losing its watery surroundings. A pale cloud reflection crosses the upper portion of the frame, breaking into irregular bright pieces. The little shell is the most concentrated point of activity in a broad field of soft movement, giving the feeding pause both intimacy and space.
