The Sea Room beneath the Curved Gallery
Published · Updated
A tall arched window brings the sea into this warm timber sitting room. Its dark grid continues the curve of the roof, framing low waves, coastal grasses and a distant headland. Broad wooden beams cross the cedar ceiling above, giving the room a sense of shelter despite the open horizon.
The upper gallery bends around a substantial brick chimney. A pale plaster guard rests on the thick timber rim, with exposed joists visible underneath. Beside the fireplace, a short curved stair links the upper rooms to the living space. The hearth faces a lower seating hollow lined with cream upholstery and rust-colored cushions.
The circular arrangement draws attention toward the fire, while shallow steps turn outward toward the window. A low wooden table, coarse woven rug and folded blanket keep the space relaxed. Sunlight falls across the gallery edge and floor, leaving the areas beneath the balcony in gentle shade.
