The Room Curves around the Granite Spine

Published · Updated

A broad granite outcrop runs through this sitting room, rising beside a curved sofa before continuing beyond the glass into autumn woodland. The rock keeps its rough surface, pale mineral flecks, deep fissures and patches of green moss. Smooth timber and soft upholstery follow its uneven edge. Wide oak steps descend to the seating nook, where a small oval table sits within reach of the moss-grey cushions and a cream blanket hangs over the near end.

A long strip of roof glazing follows the stone overhead. Its daylight reaches the higher ridges while leaving the lower crevices and the inner face of the bench in shade. Across the far end, tall framed windows reveal more of the rocky hillside and copper-colored foliage. Low bookshelves, a mustard armchair and warm plaster walls complete the domestic setting. The different surfaces work together because the room gives the outcrop space to retain its irregular form. The resulting interior feels sheltered and usable while keeping a direct, visible connection with the ground outside.
