Shell Grotto Opens onto the Coastal Garden

Published · Updated

The coastal shell grotto turns an entire garden room into a patterned surface. Scallop mosaics spread across the curved walls and vaulted ceiling in broad fans, circular flowers and flowing borders. Cream, peach and charcoal shells stand out against pale mortar. Their ridges catch the light at different angles, giving the decoration a relief that a painted pattern would not have.

A built-in stone bench follows the left wall beneath the largest fans. Its smooth seat provides a quiet horizontal edge among the thousands of small shapes. The pebble floor brings another natural texture into the room, with rounded gray and warm brown stones arranged in an irregular surface. Shadow strengthens the sense of a cool interior.

Through the thick arch, palm leaves overlap white hydrangea flowers and a spreading tree draped in pale moss. Bright garden light reaches the threshold and breaks into soft patches across the floor. The open doorway makes the dense decoration feel connected to the planting outside. This view brings together an ambitious garden feature, a sheltered seat and the pleasure of carefully arranged found materials.
