Sea mist beyond the bamboo pavilion
Published · Updated
A bamboo pavilion frames a misty stretch of coast, its bundled supports rising close to the camera before curving overhead. Smaller ribs and diagonal braces meet beneath a pale fabric canopy. Dark lashings wrap the joints, while visible nodes and changes in the bamboo's color give the structure a varied surface. The nearest column rests on a broad stone footing at the edge of the view.
Rain-darkened paving spreads beneath the roof, reflecting a little of the soft light from outside. A low rough stone wall separates the terrace from the rocky shore. Beyond it, gray-green waves break into white lines, and coastal mist partly veils the slopes above the water.
The open side allows the roof's sheltered space and the exposed coastline to appear together. The fabric transmits an even cream light, contrasting with the deeper brown of the damp bamboo. Close construction details remain sharp while the headland fades into the weather. The photograph draws its scale from this change in distance, moving from a tied joint and wet floor to the wide coast beyond.
