Sleeping sand face on the windy beach
Published · Updated
A sleeping sand face lies within a broad mound beside the surf, its closed eyes and shallow hair grooves carved at a monumental scale. A sculptor works close to the cheek with a small brush, giving the beach sculpture a human measure without filling the foreground.
Tool tracks, loose grains and brush marks keep the carved sand visibly different from stone or skin. The mound meets a scattered apron of sand along its lower edge, with a tray of simple tools nearby. Gray-blue waves and an overcast sky extend behind the sculpture, leaving the anonymous sleeping expression to occupy a quiet, unusually large place on the windy shore.
