Snooker in the Frosting Palm House
Published · Updated
A single lamp lights the green felt of a snooker table deep inside a tall palm house. Two small figures stand at opposite ends, surrounded by layered ferns, potted flowers and dark palm fronds. Above them, the glass roof rises far beyond the circle of warm light. One narrow stretch of glazing carries an extraordinary pattern of pale frost, its branching shapes echoing the living plants below. The neighbouring panes remain dark and wet.
A slender spiral stair winds around a pale iron column on the left, giving the room a sense of height and intricate structure. Trailing leaves soften its rails, while benches under loose dust sheets disappear among the plants. The red balls form a small cluster on the table, and a straw hat rests near the older player. Moonlight catches the upper glass and the frost without reaching the warm tiled floor. The contrast makes the familiar game feel suspended in an unusual moment: a humid indoor garden turning cold along one wall, while the players quietly wait.
