Stone labyrinth glows beneath the vaulted hall

Published · Updated

A stone labyrinth spreads across the foreground of an empty vaulted hall. Black and cream bands turn around an eight-point star, creating a large octagonal pattern within the darker surrounding pavement. Slab joints and small changes in the stone surface remain visible, giving the precise geometry a worn material character.

Beyond the patterned floor, clustered columns rise toward pointed ribbed vaults. Carved capitals repeat along both sides of the space, while a dark arch closes the distant view. Tall stained-glass windows bring narrow areas of strong color into the otherwise quiet limestone interior. Warm sunlight brushes the right-hand columns and emphasizes their rounded shafts.

Colored window light falls across the lower left of the photograph in soft red, blue and violet patches. These translucent shapes cross the inlaid bands without obscuring them. The high oblique viewpoint connects the floor design to the scale of the hall above it. Empty paving around the columns leaves the architectural rhythm easy to follow, with the central star providing a calm point of attention.
