Sundogs Flank the Low Winter Prairie Sun
Published · Updated
Sundogs glow on either side of the low sun above a winter prairie. The central light is small and bright, with taller warm patches set farther out across the sky. A faint curved halo rises above them, almost disappearing into the cool blue. Thin clouds stretch horizontally behind the light and emphasize the flatness of the distant land.
Snow ridges fill the foreground in long, shallow folds. Their sunlit edges turn pale gold while the hollows remain blue. Dry grass stems break through the surface in scattered clusters, adding fine dark lines and tiny sparkling tips. The close texture gives the open landscape something tangible to follow before the eye reaches the horizon.
An old fence recedes along the left side toward a small distant shelterbelt. Beyond it, the field continues without buildings or people in view. Warm color stays concentrated near the sun and along the exposed snow, leaving the upper sky quiet. The tall composition joins the delicate foreground grasses with the broad atmospheric display, making a still winter evening feel unusually spacious.
