Tank engine on the flooded causeway

Published · Updated

A black tank engine crosses a raised causeway through a flooded marsh at sunrise. Its rounded smokebox, side tanks and linked driving wheels stand clearly above the low stone embankment. The rail bed remains dry, separated from the surrounding water by a sloping wall of uneven gray stones. A broad exhaust plume drifts to the right beneath a textured cloud ceiling.

The low sun appears at the left edge of the distant trees. Warm light picks out the engine's riveted metal panels and briefly catches the rail, while most of the locomotive stays dark. Marsh reeds fill the near water in irregular clumps. Their thin stems break the reflected engine into shifting patches rather than a perfect second outline.

There is no busy platform or crowded train in this view. The compact locomotive travels through a wide, still landscape, with willow trees and mist softening the far bank. Large areas of water and sky leave room around the machinery and make the small raised route through the wetland easy to follow.
