The block tower in the fern conservatory
Published · Updated
The block tower holds together for another moment as one friend eases a low piece out of its course. Her companion watches the same block, smiling with a hand near her cheek. The wooden game supplies a quiet point of suspense inside a wonderfully abundant fern conservatory. Both women have room to move around the stack, and the worn brick floor gives the small gathering a grounded, informal setting.
Above them, pale green ironwork rises into a tall glazed roof. Fine fern fronds spread across the light, climbing plants soften the framework, and citrus foliage fills the edges. The alternating courses of the tower echo the repeating structure overhead on a much smaller scale. Warm wood, terracotta trousers and a blue dress separate the foreground from the many shades of green without overwhelming the plants.
Sunlight reaches the floor in broken patches, connecting the players, pots and roof into the same afternoon. The photograph leaves enough space above the action to enjoy the height of the conservatory as well as the friends' shared concentration. Its portrait framing works well for a mobile background or an illustrated story about playful gatherings, botanical interiors and spending time together in memorable places.
