The Brick Arch That Turns as It Rises

Published · Updated

Ordinary red and buff bricks form an extraordinary arch at the entrance to this walled garden. The square piers gradually turn as they rise, and the curve across the top continues the rotation. Sunlight catches the changing planes, making the twisted shape visible without hiding the individual bricks or pale mortar joints. Some edges are chipped and mottled, giving the carefully built structure the texture of an established garden feature. Its open centre frames an apple tree with small red fruit among the leaves.

A damp stone path passes between the piers and curves into low flowering beds. The garden walls are softened by ivy, and taller trees bring yellow autumn colour above them. Small reflections on the paving carry the morning light toward the foreground. With no gate or other decoration inside the opening, the turning masonry remains the centre of attention. The photograph combines a familiar material with an unexpected construction, showing the complete arch and enough of the surrounding garden to make its scale and purpose clear.
