The Bus through the Tunnel of Lights
Published · Updated
Orange lights follow the twisting oak branches until the whole road seems to pass beneath one enormous glowing roof. Paper lanterns hang at different heights, some round and some slender, their ribbed surfaces lit from within. Beneath them, an old yellow bus rolls toward the camera with its headlights spilling pale light across the asphalt. Brown leaves lift beside the wheels while more lie along the road's dark edges. The bend behind the bus reveals another series of illuminated arches disappearing into the trees.
Smiling children look through the broad windshield and the row of smaller side windows. Their costumes bring little flashes of color into the warm interior, while a driver sits at the wheel. Curved metal panels, heavy tires and the tall front grille give the bus a solid, familiar presence beneath the extraordinary canopy. Most of the sky stays hidden, leaving the eye to follow the lights into the distance.
