The Spar Across the Windmill Door
Published · Updated
A traveller pauses on the narrow windmill stairs with his lantern raised. Behind a barred opening, an old miller looks out beneath a flour-dusted cap. A long timber spar holds the door shut between them. Above the encounter, a great stone turns beneath wooden gears and a central shaft, bringing the machinery into the same close, uneasy view as the two men.
The stairway falls away into darkness below the traveller’s boots. Sacks crowd the landing, flour catches the lantern light and a pumpkin rests among the stores. Through a tiny window, lightning outlines a windmill against the storm. Rough beams, worn steps and coarse cloth make the room feel built for work rather than ceremony. The low viewpoint follows the spar across the frame before rising to the miller’s face and the machinery overhead. Amber light warms the timber while cold flashes enter from outside. The photograph holds the moment before a practical barrier might be lifted, leaving the traveller’s decision suspended in the dusty air.
