The Cat at the Attic Stair
Published · Updated
A black cat waits at the top of a steep wooden stair, its small golden eyes catching the light from below. The stairwell fills the photograph, each tread worn unevenly by years of use. Traces of blue-green paint remain along the edges, while the middle of the wood has softened to warm brown. A rope handrail follows the whitewashed wall, leading toward the dark attic and the cat’s perfectly still silhouette.
Below, the shadow of a farmer in a cap raises a lamp toward the landing. The person remains outside the frame, leaving only this quiet sign of approach. A straw hat hangs higher on the wall, and an uncarved pumpkin rests near the lowest steps. In the attic, bundles of corn and dried herbs hang from rough beams beside a closed window. Cool moonlight catches bare branches beyond the glass, contrasting with the amber stairwell. The simple arrangement turns familiar farmhouse materials into a gentle Halloween scene, with the watchful cat holding the threshold between warmth and darkness.
