The Copper Vaulted Breakfast Room

Published · Updated

Two neat rows of copper pans bring a warm glow to this tall vaulted kitchen. Their round surfaces catch the light from a large window and the milk-glass pendant lamps overhead. Pale textured plaster sweeps into the ceiling vault, creating a soft backdrop for the dark iron range and its straight black flue. Earthenware jars, jugs and smaller pans sit along the counters, while recessed shelves hold more simple pottery.

At the centre, a substantial oak table is laid for breakfast with white cups, a linen runner, a round loaf and a fruit tart. Plain wooden chairs with woven seats keep the setting relaxed. Autumn leaves show through the tall window, and branches in pottery vases repeat their colours indoors. The stone floor is worn and unevenly reflective, giving the room a sense of age and daily use. Together, copper, timber, linen and pale masonry create a generous kitchen without elaborate decoration.
