The Figure at the Pass
Published · Updated
Beyond the wooden steering wheel, a narrow mountain road bends between rough stone walls and an open valley. Golden larches climb the slopes beneath a wall of steep grey peaks. Snow clings to the high gullies, while the road remains clear and dry. A small stone shelter sits against the hillside with a single pumpkin on its step, a quiet autumn detail beside the dark doorway.
A man waits on the gravel shoulder with his thumb raised. His long coat and fur hat carry a dusting of snow that seems out of place at this lower, sunlit bend. The view from inside the car makes the encounter immediate without losing the scale of the mountains. Warm light traces the cliffs and tree branches; the valley beneath them falls into cooler shadow. The worn wheel, dull bonnet, coarse stone and pale grit give this Halloween road scene a grounded, tactile character, while the waiting figure introduces a small, unresolved mystery.
