The Foxglove Made of Red Shoes

Published · Updated

A towering green stalk carries a series of crimson shoes arranged like foxglove flowers. The larger forms hang near the planting bed, while smaller ones taper toward the top. Curved openings and narrow heels make the shoes recognisable even as their downward arrangement suggests a flowering stem. Small green leaves and brackets connect each red form to the central support. Light catches the worn painted surfaces, revealing the sculpture as a physical piece of garden metalwork.

Burgundy flowers and pale grasses gather around the base. Beyond them, rain-darkened limestone paving leads toward a small open arcade, and trained pear trees spread across the surrounding wall. Golden foliage rises above the masonry beneath a sky of broken cloud. Fallen leaves rest along the planting edge and between the paving stones. The courtyard's restrained materials allow the tall red silhouette to command the view. Seen from near its base, the complete sculpture combines a familiar garden flower shape with an unexpected everyday object, keeping the playful construction visible from top to bottom.
