The Garden Parlour with a Water Table

Published · Updated

A shallow reflecting table gives this roofless garden room its quiet center. Golden leaves lie on the water, and the tall window openings appear again in its dark surface. The table stands on substantial stone supports, leaving the surrounding flagstones open for a comfortable route through the room.

The old fireplace has become a place for ferns. Above it, a planted mantel carries trailing leaves and small pale flowers, while a climbing vine spreads across the open roofline. These changes preserve the proportions of a domestic room while allowing the garden to occupy its former walls and ceiling.

A long cushioned bench beneath the arches and a wooden chair beside the hearth offer places to sit in filtered sunlight. Beyond the empty windows, clipped greenery gives depth to the view. Worn stone, damp paving and soft green cushions keep the setting grounded and inviting.
