The Grandfather and the Animal Masks

Published · Updated

A grandfather sits upright in a deep leather wingback chair, a tartan rug over his knees and burgundy velvet catching the firelight. The low viewpoint looks past the chair’s rolled arm and his slippered feet toward four relatives seated across the library. Each wears a different animal mask: a long-eared hound, a hare, a russet fox and a black crow. Their ordinary tweed and dark dresses make the masks feel especially unexpected.

Three figures remain still, hands resting in their laps. The crow turns toward the tall window with one hand lifted, reacting to fireworks beyond the rain-speckled glass. Warm candles and a small fire illuminate the bookcases, carved mantel and pumpkins, while blue night fills the window. Creased leather, dense velvet, woven carpet and the masks’ uneven surfaces give the room a close material richness. The gathering is quiet and formal, but the single startled movement introduces a playful uncertainty into the otherwise composed Halloween scene.
