The House with the Rippling Green Roof
Published · Updated
The green tiled roof of this small house rises and falls in broad waves above a cream facade. Its window groups bend with the walls, their dark frames following gentle curves rather than straight rectangles. A tall central window reveals the stair within and continues upward toward a rounded dormer. Two plain green doors occupy the ground floor, giving the unusual shape a familiar domestic scale. Individual tiles and small plaster marks keep the building tactile and believable.
Warm light fills the windows and spills from modest lamps over the doorways. The blue light of winter dusk cools the roof and the bare branches on either side. A neighboring stone building, upright trees and a level pavement make the carefully curved construction especially clear. Recent rain has left amber reflections across the dark cobbled street, with small shrubs in pots near the entrances. The square is empty, allowing the eye to follow the facade from its calm lower doorways to the lively roofline above.
