The Ice Carver Before the Fur-Coated Judges
Published · Updated
The ice carver stands beside a leaping hare in the centre of the frozen hall. A cloud of breath hangs beside his face, and a tool rests in one gloved hand. The hare rises from a rough block with its ears upright and one forepaw extended. From the high bench, fur-coated judges look down across a floor marked by pale frost and long shadows.
The camera sits close behind a dark fur shoulder, making the distant carver and sculpture feel especially small. Heavy ice chairs continue along the bench, and a carved ice pumpkin glows near its edge. Broad blocks form the plain walls, their cloudy seams catching cold white light. Chips around the hare's base show where the carving has been cut, while its translucent body keeps the same frozen grain through the ears, face and paws. This Halloween photograph combines an austere winter setting with the suggestion of a sculpture about to move. Its blue-white tones and deep vertical view suit an atmospheric wallpaper or a seasonal print.
