The Ivory Shell in the Seaside Court
Published · Updated
A pale ceramic sculpture curls upward in a sheltered court beside the sea. Its broad lower spiral surrounds a small opening, while a long, thin lip rises and turns outward at the top. A raised seam travels across the curved body, adding a quiet line to the simple form. Warm sunlight reveals the sandy speckles, uneven glaze and small marks that give the surface a handmade character.
The sculpture rests on a dark block of weathered timber, a rough contrast to the ivory ceramic. Low limestone walls frame the blue water beyond, and a rectangular opening in the right wall gives another glimpse of the coast. A shallow puddle catches part of the sculpture near the foreground, while grasses soften the gravel border on the left. The whole setting is open and unoccupied. Curved ceramic, square timber and level sea meet in a restrained composition, with the clear side light making every change in thickness and direction easy to see.
