The Keeper’s Coat in the Watch Room

Published · Updated

An empty dark uniform lies across the lighthouse floorboards in a drift of pale sand. The double-breasted coat, loose trousers and peaked cap have settled into soft folds, with no one inside them. Small grains catch the light along the sleeves and hems. Against the curved wall, an old telescope rests where it seems to have rolled to a stop.

A worn photograph is propped beside the clothing, showing a uniformed keeper on a gallery. Nearby, a green-shaded lamp lights a closed book, an oil can and a mug of tea. These ordinary objects make the sudden emptiness of the uniform more noticeable. A small carved pumpkin on the window sill adds a quiet October detail.

The last blue light of evening enters through the watch-room windows, beyond which the sea stretches toward a narrow warm horizon. Part of the great lighthouse lens appears at the edge of the frame. At the stair head, another keeper has paused in silhouette. The oblique view gathers clothing, sand, portrait and room into one still, unexplained moment.
