The Lit Window Across the Black Lake

Published · Updated

Six children gather around a campfire at the edge of a still forest lake. Plaid blankets, knitted hats and long marshmallow sticks create a familiar autumn camp scene. One boy points across the water, and the others turn toward a small cabin on the opposite shore. A single warm window shines through the dark trees and leaves a narrow reflection on the lake.

The fire burns within a ring of rough stones, lighting the nearby faces and the folds of the blankets. Carved pumpkins sit on the log benches, while round paper lanterns hang between the pines. A timber cabin and a small dock occupy the near shore, with a canoe resting beside the water.

Above the treeline, the last orange light of dusk fades toward a cooler blue sky. The broad dark surface of the lake separates the bright camp from the distant window. Pine bark, fallen leaves, wool and charred logs keep the scene grounded in ordinary outdoor textures. The shared glance across the water adds a quiet moment of curiosity to the warm gathering.
