Paper Bat Swarm in the Brick Orangery

Published · Updated

A sweeping ribbon of black paper bats fills the high roof of a brick orangery. Larger folded shapes hover close to the arched windows, while hundreds of smaller silhouettes curve towards the far end of the room. Pointed ears, scalloped wings and firm central creases make the handmade construction clear. Fine hanging threads catch the light, and the bats cast soft, irregular shadows across the warm brickwork.

Below the display, copper chrysanthemums sit in broad terracotta pots along the stone walkway. Low glass lanterns form a quiet line of amber light between the plants, leading towards the distant glazed doors. Purple dusk remains visible through the long roof and tall windows, bringing a cool colour to the upper half of the scene. The iron ribs frame the installation without interrupting its flowing shape.

This Halloween setting combines a simple paper craft with an ambitious sense of scale. The unoccupied walkway, rich autumn flowers and restrained candlelight give it a calm atmosphere suited to seasonal wallpaper, decoration inspiration or an October feature.
