The Living Basket Tree in the Autumn Garden
Published · Updated
Several living trunks weave together to form a tall open basket at the center of this autumn garden. The pale mottled bark continues around each crossing, while long diamond-shaped gaps reveal the light and planting beyond. Above the woven section, the stems separate into ordinary spreading branches beneath a canopy of golden leaves. Strong roots spread across the ground, giving the unusual form the weight and scale of a mature tree.
A quiet gravel path passes beside the trunk, with a simple stone bench set back on the left. Ferns, low shrubs and moss soften the roots, and fallen leaves collect along the edge of the planting bed. Warm sunlight enters from behind the canopy, picking out the bark and leaving small pools of shade beneath the branches. Copper-colored trees in the background extend the autumn palette through the garden. The view keeps the full shaped trunk visible, inviting attention to the patient construction of living wood and the natural growth that continues above it.
