Stumpery ferns soften the twisted roots

Published · Updated

Stumpery ferns gather around twisted roots beside a narrow gravel path. A large weathered root fan rises from the left planting bed, its broken branches reaching over smaller fronds. Short cut logs stand nearer the path, where dark bark and pale exposed grain give each piece a different surface.

Fine maidenhair leaves soften the lower foreground, while taller fern fronds catch a shaft of warm light. Moss fills sheltered grooves in the timber, and small purple flowers appear among the glossy groundcover. The wood stays firmly within the planting, creating low sculptural shapes that belong to the garden's damp soil and leafy setting.

The path curves between the stumps toward a plain wooden bench under the tree canopy. Pale gravel makes the route legible through the many greens and browns. Sunlight falls in broken patches across the stones, leaving the deeper planting cool and shaded. With no people in view, the scene offers time to notice the weathered wood, fresh leaves and gentle change of scale from close detail to sheltered resting place.
