The Malachite Star Parquet Salon
Published · Updated
An immense star of timber inlay spreads across the floor of this bright salon. Pale and dark woods form long rays around a central floral medallion, while surrounding panels contain delicate curling leaves. Viewed through an open doorway, the pattern occupies most of the foreground and reveals the careful relationship between the individual pieces of wood.
Banded green columns rise between tall arched windows around the far side of the room. Their swirling mineral patterns bring a vivid colour to the otherwise pale walls. Gilded capitals and narrow gold edges catch the quiet daylight, while the bare trees and lightly frosted garden outside give the windows a cool, delicate background.
Plum upholstered seating sits close to the walls, leaving the extraordinary floor largely visible. A round green topped table carries a generous arrangement of branches near the centre, and small lamps create warm pools at the edges. The photograph suits collections focused on ornamental craftsmanship, historic interior inspiration and the rich detail that a patterned floor can bring to an open room.
