Ornate two-storey iron gallery painted red, cream, green and gold around a huge industrial flywheel in a brick hall.

The Painted Iron Machinery Hall

Published · Updated

Red iron columns and cream arches rise around an enormous green flywheel in this remarkable machinery hall. The structure forms an open octagonal gallery, with finely pierced gold leaves and curling stems decorating the railings. Green botanical capitals spread beneath the arches, linking the ornate framework to the dark metal machinery within. Above, a timber roof and slender supporting rods leave the mechanism clearly visible through the upper level.

Buff brick walls and tall arched windows surround the bright painted structure. Golden autumn foliage catches the sunlight outside, and long pale bands fall across the worn stone floor. Simple wooden benches stand at the edges of the room, providing a modest scale beside the towering columns and polished mechanical parts. The photograph brings decorative craft and industrial construction into the same view: delicate leaves, broad beams, rounded iron and rubbed brass. Warm daylight reveals the paint and casting details without overwhelming the quiet character of the restored hall.
