The Pearl Shell Mosaic Chamber

Published · Updated

Thousands of pale shells cover the walls and dome of this small coastal chamber, arranged in circles, curling borders and broad fan shapes. Dark pebbles form delicate climbing leaves against the cream ground, while salmon pink fragments add gentle warmth. A circular skylight opens at the centre of the dome, bringing blue sky and soft daylight into the richly textured room. Each shell retains its ridged surface and slightly different natural tone.

Deep niches repeat around the walls above a narrow curved wooden bench. The pale stone floor carries a central shell medallion and a border of pebble waves, continuing the decoration underfoot without crowding the room. Through a tall arched window, hydrangeas frame a distant headland and calm blue water. The photograph offers a complete view of an intricate handmade interior, where the smallest materials create a remarkable architectural surface. Dark timber and simple seating give the eye a place to rest among the patterns, while daylight reveals their depth.
