The Red Lattice over the Narrow Street
Published · Updated
A red timber canopy runs the length of a narrow stone street. Slender wooden strips cross at many angles, building an open lattice that rises over the lane and gathers around broad openings to the sky. Bolts, square cut ends and glimpses of unpainted grain make the individual pieces visible within the larger pattern. Tall red posts carry the structure along both sides.
The canopy repeats into the distance, turning a simple pedestrian passage into a sequence of airy chambers. Pale stone buildings, dark doors and restrained windows frame the red wood. Small trees stand in square stone planters between the supports, with their last autumn leaves reaching toward the open spaces overhead.
Sunlight passes through the overlapping strips and breaks into a fine pattern across the damp cobbles. The empty lane makes the construction and its changing perspective easy to read, from the nearest joints to the farthest span. This photograph is free to use, including in commercial projects.
