The Reflection That Kept Walking
Published · Updated
A long puddle opens between the granite stones of a fishing quay. In its dark water, the figure above appears again with a small, unsettling difference: one reflected arm has moved while the woman stands still. Her black coat and red shoes give the scene a quiet focal point, surrounded by the much larger sweep of harbour, cottages and clouded sky. The unusual reflection is easy to miss at first, which makes its discovery part of the photograph.
Pumpkin lanterns sit beside heavy mooring bollards, leaving warm pools of light across the wet stone. Lobster pots and coiled ropes crowd the cottage wall, where a seated fisherman remains beside his gear. Beyond him, warm windows draw the eye toward the distant headland. Boats rest in the basin, with two brighter vessels further out on the dark water. Rough granite, woven nets and worn timber keep the setting tactile. The tall composition follows the puddle from the foreground into the harbour, pairing a familiar rainy evening with a restrained Halloween mystery.
