The Roulette Ball That Would Not Fall
Published · Updated
An ivory ball hangs just above the rim of a turning roulette wheel. The red and black pockets blur beneath it, while the small sphere remains still and clear. Worn wood, dark inlay marks and a tarnished central spindle fill the foreground. A croupier has paused with his rake extended across the green felt.
At the rail, a young woman in a plain grey wool coat holds her purse tightly and watches the ball. Her concentrated expression is the sharpest face in the gathering. Several evening guests lean forward behind her, their attention fixed on the same small interruption. The quiet poses make the suspended object feel stranger than a dramatic gesture would.
Warm lamps and frosted chandelier globes illuminate burgundy curtains and the riverboat’s wooden fittings. Two carved pumpkins sit behind the guests, bringing a modest Halloween detail to the saloon. Through the windows, distant lights reflect across dark water. The scene combines the familiar textures of felt, wool and old timber with one impossible instant, caught before anyone at the table seems ready to move.
