The Shell House of Colored Glass

Published · Updated

A pointed spiral rises above this small garden house, carrying broad terracotta ribs across its cream plaster surface. Circular windows project from the side like rounded openings in a shell. At the entrance, an enormous curved wall of colored glass glows between thick pale frames. Amber, blue, green and rose pieces vary in size, allowing parts of the warm interior to show through. A short flight of stone steps connects the doorway to a damp flagstone path bordered by ferns and low flowers.

The building feels closely tied to its garden. Tree branches frame the upper edge, while the uneven stone path catches small reflections from the entrance lights. Fine surface texture and the deep window surrounds give the sweeping curves a tangible scale. The photograph is unoccupied, keeping attention on the unusual shape and the meeting of glass, plaster and planting. It is free to use, including for commercial projects, and works well with features about imaginative homes, garden architecture and expressive uses of color.
