A Sled Found in the Attic Trunk
Published · Updated
A round attic window sends a shaft of afternoon light across a girl kneeling beside an open trunk. She holds a small stack of old photographs in one hand and steadies an upright wooden sled with the other. Its worn boards and chipped red runners stand out against the dark trunk lining. The moment feels quiet and absorbed, as though the contents have only just been uncovered.
Steep timber beams enclose the room. Stacked trunks, round hatboxes, loose papers and a draped dressmaking form occupy the surrounding shadows. The girl wears a cream cable knit jumper over a plaid pinafore, with thick woollen tights. Soft light catches her long auburn hair and the raised stitches of the jumper without losing the subdued texture of the room.
Dust brightens the diagonal beam while the foreground remains in warm shade. The low viewpoint places the trunk and its contents close to the viewer, giving the discovery a tangible scale. This photograph is free to use, including in commercial projects.
