A black cat with green eyes sits on a mossy slate headstone in a misty cemetery beneath a large full moon.

The Watcher on the Gravestone

Published · Updated

A sleek black cat sits upright on the rounded crown of an old slate headstone. Its tail curls neatly around its paws, and its green eyes catch a small amount of light. Moss and pale lichen cover the stone beneath it. A weathered winged-skull carving remains visible near the top, while the lower face of the marker has worn almost smooth.

The low viewpoint places other leaning stones in the foreground and lets the cemetery recede behind the cat. A rough boundary wall crosses the middle distance. Thin mist rests above the wet grass, softening the spaces between the headstones without hiding their irregular outlines. Bare branches spread across the deep blue sky.

A large pale moon hangs behind the trees, giving the scene its cool silver edge. Farther away, two warm windows glow in a small house beyond the wall. The cat's real fur, still posture and clear silhouette anchor the quiet setting. The photograph draws its atmosphere from patient watchfulness, weathered materials and the contrast between moonlit ground and distant domestic light.
