The Wax Lady Who Turned Her Head

Published · Updated

Pools of light stretch along the wooden floor of a quiet museum gallery. Period figures stand behind velvet ropes on both sides of the aisle, their fixed gestures disappearing into the darker distance. A sea captain, a fencer and a seated figure provide layers of detail beneath the small overhead lamps. At the far end, carved pumpkins add a warm orange glow to the shadowed room.

In the aisle, a young woman has stopped with one hand on a mop handle. Her grey dress and white collar catch the nearest light as she looks toward a lady in a black mourning gown. The figure’s head is turned, her gaze meeting the woman with an unexpectedly attentive expression. Gathered silk, pleated hems, dark trim and the curve of the velvet barrier make the still display richly tactile. The photograph holds a single uncertain moment in the long gallery, using ordinary museum details and careful light to create a quiet Halloween unease.
