The Tiny Train Beneath the Mill Wall
Published · Updated
A miniature engine rolls out from a small dark opening at the base of the mill wall. Three little carriages follow, their cool window light falling onto flour scattered across the boards. The silver rails curl upward just ahead of the engine, as though the track is laying itself along the floor. Close wheel details and the tiny front lamp keep the train tangible within the larger room.
Behind a flour sack, a young woman crouches with a round sieve held before her chest. Her blue linen dress and white apron are lightly dusted, and long hair falls beneath a red headscarf. The sieve’s mesh and wooden rim make an improvised shield against the unexpected visitor. Her surprised gaze follows the little train rather than the viewer.
Firelight warms the stone grate and heavy beams behind her. An oil lamp rests on a crate, with a basket of apples and a rag rug nearby. Through the open shutters, part of the water wheel appears in the dark. Cool carriage windows and the warm room light meet across the flour-dusted floor.
