Transporter gondola crosses the tidal river

Published · Updated

A transporter gondola carries a small cream car just above the tidal river. Long suspension cables connect the level platform to the high span, leaving a remarkable amount of open air between the crossing and the structure that supports it. A little green cabin and low railings give the hanging platform the character of a compact ferry.

The blue steel bridge rises on two tall lattice towers with substantial stone bases. Diagonal braces, walkways and repeating triangles make its construction visible from the riverbank. Gray clouds pass behind the span, while breaks in the light pick out rivets and edges. On the far shore, red brick buildings sit among trees turning yellow and orange.

Old timber posts emerge from the muddy foreground beside rough grass and dark stones. Small ripples cover the water, softening the reflections of the towers and suspended car. The low viewpoint holds the near bank, river traffic and high structure in one frame. The tiny crossing beneath the enormous span gives the photograph its unusual scale, with weathered materials grounding the view in a working waterfront.
