Treats on the Curving Staircase
Published · Updated
Four children gather on a landing outside an open apartment door. A black cat, a round orange pumpkin, a white sheet ghost and a small knight hold their places beside a glowing carved pumpkin. A woman crouches in the doorway with a copper bowl of sweets, smiling as the children bring their cloth bags forward.
The scene is viewed from the floor above, through the broad curve of a polished wooden handrail. Curling iron balusters repeat along the stairs, and a worn red runner follows the stone steps down through the building. A narrow cage lift stands beside the landing. Tall windows bring cool evening colour into the cream-walled stairwell.
Warm wall lamps mark the landings at different heights, revealing scuffs in the stone and the soft sheen of the handrail. The high viewpoint makes the small gathering feel part of a much larger, quietly inhabited building. Simple homemade costumes and a bowl of sweets bring a festive pause to the familiar journey between apartment doors.
