Tubeworm Colony beside a Dark Vent

Published · Updated

A tubeworm colony spreads across the dark side of a mineral chimney. Ivory tubes rise at different heights and angles, each carrying a small cluster of crimson plumes at its open end. The nearest tubes show fine wrinkles and uneven chalky surfaces. Farther back, smaller forms merge into a dense living cover on the rock.

The chimney is deeply pitted, with black ridges, pale deposits and loose sediment caught between the attached tubes. Some stems bend outward into the water, while others remain close to the mineral face. A few tiny pale animals sit on the upper rock. The irregular spacing keeps the colony connected to the rough surface beneath it.

Across a dark gap, a second chimney recedes into the background. A gray vent cloud rises from its upper opening and softens as it enters the surrounding water. Small suspended particles catch the localized light, while the distant rock loses detail. The portrait view follows the height of the habitat, moving from bright foreground tubes to the dim plume above and revealing an unusually vivid community in a dark marine setting.
