The Umbrella on the Long Bridge
Published · Updated
A woman in a belted cream coat waits beside the railing of a long bridge. Her black umbrella is open although the pavement is dry and the evening sky is clear. Below the rail, her inverted reflection appears among narrow rain streaks and small rings on the water. That small contradiction gives a peaceful autumn scene its unsettling centre. The woman looks toward the approaching car as the road curves away behind her.
Two hands on a steering wheel place the viewer inside the encounter. Beyond the bonnet, repeated steel rails and unlit lamps lead toward a wooded shore, where a little boathouse rests close to the lake. The low sun colours the still water in amber and blue, and a single pumpkin sits on a broad railing post. The coat, worn pavement and weathered metal remain quiet and ordinary. Their familiarity makes the impossible patch of reflected rain more noticeable, while the tall composition holds the driver, waiting woman and open lake in one continuous view.
